Posted: 23 Sep 2021 02:34 PM PDT Ever since the arrival of videogames in the 1980's, videogames are becoming better and better; not just the graphics but the stories as well. Videogames have become a crucial medium for storytelling in virtual and immersive open worlds. The biggest game of this decade, Rockstar's "Red Dead Redemption II, "features a man's journey in peak-industrial revolution America. What makes this game have such a good story is the complexity. The protagonist, Arthur, is an outlaw who runs with a gang: robbing trains, robbing oilmen, and robbing people who rob people. However, the protagonist isn't all ludicrous. The gang of outlaws are all motivated by the same cause. They are racking enough money to finally move the whole gang to Tahiti; a plan that only the leader, Dutch, made up. Through the course of the story and while the money is racking up, the compassionate and father-figure Dutch changes into a selfish and money-greedy monster. While all of that is happening, Arthur is a conflicted character; he wants to end living like an outlaw, but he doesn't want to leave his family (the gang). Arthur could just runaway and live a happy life with his ex-wife, but he knows he can't do that. Especially when the leader is manipulating everyone to steal more money even after he is being with no regard for anyone's safety. With over 60 hours of story playtime, the story unfolds through a long course of events and character actions and dialogue, which is what reveals character development and the story's complexity. Furthermore, because the game shares some moments with the player where it seems the dialogue is missing, the characters are portrayed a little ambiguously. Every player experiences the game differently since everyone interprets the characters differently. For example, some players might believe that Dutch was a fraud all along while others believe that he was influenced by an outside factor. Even though the story can be slow and boring for some people, the player can explore the massive open world of Industrial America. I refer to a time when I was riding my horse out west in the game and I came across a camp that was set up next to the railroad. It turns out that Chinese immigrants were building railroads next to a mountain, and they set up a camp because they were staying there for a couple of days. Just walking around the camp and exploring all the little details like a little boy handing out tea to his fellow Chinese workers was just incredible to see in a virtual world. It provides a sense of depth to America's past and that the foundations were built by immigrants who arrived on boats over 100 years ago. I also saw some Indian camps burned down by the army in the mountains because in 1899, the government was decimating all the Indians, pushing them further out west, and keeping vaccines away from them so that there would be no survivors remaining. To further develop the history of the Indians, a part of the story consists of the gang helping Indians invade an oil plant owned by a company which sent lobbyists to change its zoning laws for Indian Reservations. To pass time a player, can hunt animals, trade pelts, bounty-hunt, and explore the frontier expansion of America. The level of detail in this vast open world and the amazing story is what sets this videogame as a prime example of a videogame with a phenomenal story Although the characters were fictional, the details were still accurate as to what happened to the Indians during America's westward expansion. Experiencing this in a virtual world where the player controls every piece is what really defines story telling in videogames. [link] [comments] | ||
