This post is broken up into 2 parts, the first is our statement and actions we're taking about the incident and the second part is about the spoiler rule and moving forward. Comments are open again. Posting will remain restricted until 2 hours from now. Posting is now enabled.

Late last night, we were made aware of an abuse of power by a member of our moderation team. A number of concerned users brought this to our attention through Mod-mails and posts on our subreddit questioning why a user had been banned without violating any rules. Our team was quickly overwhelmed by the amount of attention and the number of messages we were receiving, and we made the decision to temporarily lock the subreddit while we gave these allegations every consideration they deserved, and conducted a full investigation.

Allow me to begin by saying that we have heard you, and we agree with you. A member of our mod team absolutely acted in a manner that was unacceptable, and levied a three day ban against a user who was simply discussing the merit of one of our rules. When that user attempted to contact our team, they received a reply from the mod who had banned them, claiming that they were "not in the mood for mercy" and would not entertain a discussion. That user was then muted for 28 days.

This is absolutely not how we moderate our community; we have made the decision to release this moderator from our team, as well as to revoke all bans and mutes issued by this moderator. I would like to personally apologise to this user, as well as to any other users who have had their comments removed or bans issued during this incident. Rest assured that, as soon as we were made aware of this abuse of power, all moderators were instructed to refrain from deleting or removing posts and comments and were instructed not to issue any bans. Any posts that appear to have been hidden or removed have been taken down as a result of our Auto-moderator's civility or new user/low karma filter.

It is our belief at r/RedDeadRedemption that our moderator team should be made up of users from our community, users who are interested in the game we're all here for, and users who view our contributors and users as peers. This community will always be open to receiving feedback and constructive criticism from our members; our community only exists because of you, the members who participate in it. We will never be in the business of muting and banning anyone who innocently questions the reason for a rule to exist, and any moderator who views our members as beneath them will have no place on our team. I sincerely believe that open discussion and feedback on our actions have allowed this community to become the huge success that it is. That's how we see it now, and how it's going to be moving forward and into any potential new Red Dead games.

I will be speaking with the rest of the moderation team later today, in order to ensure this type of incident does not happen in the future and to ensure that all of our moderators are clear on what is acceptable behaviour when executing their duties. Our senior moderators will also be reviewing the spoiler rule and will discuss lifting the severity of punishments issued under this rule.

I would ask you all to please understand that this was an isolated incident committed by a single moderator, who flagrantly disregarded our protocols and expectations due to their own frustration. Please refrain from brigading the subreddit and causing more work for other moderators, and from personally attacking anyone. If you have been affected by this incident and need to contact our team for a resolution, please send us a mod-mail and we will speak with you as soon as possible. If you do not get a resolution from that avenue within this next week please contact myself or /u/SpitzerFX directly.

Thank you for being committed to keeping our community an inclusive and enjoyable place for all, and thank you for holding our moderator team accountable for their actions. We'll do our best to make sure this never happens again.

    Spoilers on /r/reddeadredemption

This incident was mainly caused by a misunderstanding of the spoiler rules on here. I'll lay out Rule 2 in details and if you have any comments you can always ask them in this thread or mod-mail anytime without being punished.

    Old Rule:

    2. NO SPOILING RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 WITHOUT THE USE OF THE SPOILER TAG.

    • Use spoiler syntax:RDR is a great game will become RDR is a great game
    • Comment spoiler syntax DOES NOT work for some mobile users. Everyone still must use spoiler syntax, but those who browse on mobile web or non-official Reddit apps be aware
    • Absolutely no spoilers, intentional or otherwise, in the title of your post.
    • All posts with spoilers INSIDE them must have [Spoilers] or [Spoiler] in the title
    • This will be considered a serious offence and will result in a permanent ban from the subreddit.
    • Unsure whether it's a story spoiler? Mark it as one to be safe. (Or ask the mods)
    • Revealing spoilers of other major releases, such as TLOU2, will also not be tolerated and may result in a ban.

So there's a few issues right away that we want to make clear, here's our new rule.

    New Rule

Rule 2: Spoilers in our community.
    • NO SPOILING RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 WITHOUT THE USE OF THE SPOILER TAG.
    • Use spoiler syntax:>!RDR is a great game!< will become RDR is a great game
    • Absolutely no spoilers, intentional or otherwise for any game in the title of your post.
    • If the body of your post contains a spoiler it must be marked as a spoiler. To do this put [Spoiler] or [Spoilers] in the title. You can also press the "Mark as spoiler" button or similar.
    • Intentionally spoiling RDR2 or any other game to ruin other's enjoyment will result in a permanent removal from this community.
    • Unsure whether it's a story spoiler? Mark it as one to be safe. (Or ask the mods)
    • Spoiler tags for RDR1 are strongly recommended, but not required.
Rule 2 Quick guide How do I follow the rules? Punishment for rule breaking
Spoilers of any kind from any game cannot be put in the title of your post Don't put any spoilers in the title, they can't be hidden! Permanent ban for intentional violations, warnings or temp bans depending on user history or severity.
RDR1 Spoilers are strongly recommended to be marked, but it's not required Mark RDR1 spoilers if you want to, use the spoiler syntax shown above or click the "Mark as spoiler" button on the post Temp ban/Permanent ban for intentional violations which try to ruin another user's experience
RDR2 Spoilers must be marked For RDR2 spoilers use the spoiler syntax shown above or click the "Mark as spoiler" button on the post Warning for accidental violations, banning for intentional violations which try to ruin another user's experience
Intentionally spoiling RDR1 or RDR2 or any game in an effort to ruin another user's experience will result in your permanent ban Don't be an asshole, that's Rule 1 Permanent ban

    Spoiler rules moving forward

We're going to have an internal discussion on the merits of having a spoiler rule. After that we'll come out to the community to see what the community would like us to do. Rules regarding intentional spoilers will always be around, that's not going to change, if you're trying to ruin another user's experience on here you're not welcome. My inbox is always open.

Does any game have better interactive systems/contextual animations? This turkey jumps into my lap, falls, and shakes it off, completely unscripted. Looks like real life and makes me question my own reality
