So we all know Michael from GTAV can be seen as an O’Driscoll in a gang photo, but I think I found him in-game as well. Same outfit.

I feel like an idiot for preferring John Marston

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 12:35 PM PDT

I'm not sure if this is worth discussing but I feel like I'm considered an idiot for preferring John Marston. Arthur is easily my second favorite character in the series, but I prefer John. The Epilogue for some reason sold me on John's growth as a character and that he is complex as well. It's clear he wants to do right by his family, but it's in his nature to fight since it's all he's ever done. But he realizes that family indeed is more important and works toward making them happy.

If it were not for Sadie finding Micah, I think he would have left the life completely behind and moved on. It's easy to say John is a fool for "looking back" but that's not the only point. John did it because he loved Arthur and owes his entire life to him. If the man who was more or less responsible for Arthur's death is still getting away with horrible acts, then I would want to stop him just the same. Can any of you tell me if your brother was killed, you wouldn't want to stop the person who did it? I'm also not sure why going after Micah wouldn't be considered a bounty since he's a wanted man. Sadie could've collected on the bounty and took responsibility and left John with the Blackwater money.

For the record, I have played through the original Redemption as well and I feel he is extremely mature and caring to those he admires. He seems to deeply admire Bonnie and Drew MacFarlane in particular. He doesn't like the shysters and fools he comes across like Irish and West Dickens, but he even does right by West Dickens in the end. I also really liked when you saw him change and decide that there was more to life than just his mission and he genuinely helped the rebels fight Allende. He clearly cared for Luisa and was distraught by her death, also angry every time Reyes would forget her name. Part of what I find so strong and endearing is John didn't second guess dying for his family. He walked straight into that barn, sent them on their way, took one final deep breath, and walked through the doors. If Arthur's death is a hero's death, so is John's.

Am I an idiot for preferring John? It sort of feels like I don't even have room for discussion anywhere because Arthur has been virtually claimed to be the best video game character of all time. The Redemption series is easily my favorite series of gaming out there, but it is becoming kind of depressing to see John shit on and I have no one to relate to as far as discussion. As I said, I love Arthur, and think at times he is way better written, but John to me is something else. It's kind of a bittersweet feeling right now, honestly.
