A certain exchange between Arthur and Dutch in Chapter Six. Posted: 28 Sep 2020 09:58 AM PDT On my second playthrough, at the end of Chapter Six when Abigail is arrested and John is presumed dead, Arthur and Dutch have an exchange that really hit me. Arthur (Referring to Jack): "What, you just gonna let the boy become an orphan!?" It hit me.,..yes, Dutch is planning to let Jack become an orphan, because orphan little boys are what Dutch essentially preys upon. With both of his parents dead, Jack would be Dutch's to mold and shape into his next Arthur or John. He could plant the seeds it Jack's head from the age of four that his parents were killed by the law because they didn't abide by the rules of society. The parts where John was left to die by Dutch and Dutch refused to rescue Abigail would never surface, of course. Instead it would be that the law killed Jack's parents and Dutch decided to take Jack under his wing, educate him, raise him and do so all "in their honor". It's a big part of Dutch's MO, to turn orphans and discontents into angry and resentful adults who will join him in his crusade against society and law. And Jack Marston would grow into just that, and Dutch at that point, likely has every intention of bringing him there. It's such a simple line, but there's so much behind it. And I know that Jack kind of goes down that path eventually anyway, but I've always liked to think that after killing Ross, Jack backed away from being a gunslinger and forged his own path through life. In my version, he was a fur trader, but who knows. I like to think that Jack didn't rail against society and law in general, but against Ross himself. [link] [comments] | ||
