All common questions about the game should be directed here. This includes both single-player and online questions. When asking a question, it is often beneficial to share which mode you are referring to in order to get an accurate response. Also consider sharing any relevant information that may help someone answer your question.

All story spoilers must be displayed with the proper format:

    >!RDR is a great game!<

    gives you:

    RDR is a great game

If you're not sure if you should use a spoiler tag or not, err on the side of caution and use one. Also, it's a nice gesture to visibly indicate the general nature of your spoiler before the tag, so people know what you're spoiling.

    Story Mode>Online

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:04 PM PST

Why do some people buy a 60 dollar game and only play the online, which is just a way Rockstar tries to get you to buy gold bars? The story mode has basically everything in online but does it better and has an actual great character you can play as instead of your idiot online character who cant speak. Story mode has better missions, better bounty hunting, has garment sets just like online does, No griefers that kill you constantly, and overall more stuff to do. If your going to buy this game just for the online, wait for it to come out as a stand alone game.

    I've lost faith in Rockstar

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:33 AM PST

I love Rockstar. I've been playing their games since Earth Worm Jim. I think Dan Houser was the gaming equivalent of Martin Scorsese. But this new update broke me. I understand making money. But I bought my bounty licence already, why are you expecting me to give more money to access content you're adding because RDO is a flop? Take-Two is going to ruin a billion dollar company with shit like this.

    My Dutch theory.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:10 AM PST

This has been said before but I'd like to bring up the conversation again due to me finishing my first play through and feeling empty inside.

This may contain spoilers so do not read if that will be an issue.

Everyone has their theories on who Dutch is and when he "went crazy". Was it during Blackwater? When Hosea died?! Or the brain injury?

My theory is that all these things were a factor but he was a sociopath from the beginning and shows all the signs very clearly in the game.

Grandiose - sociopaths have a grandiose idea of themselves. Dutch thinks he's different from other outlaws, he's better, he is fighting for something bigger but in reality, he's still a cold blooded killer and thief.

Impulsively - sociopaths act impulsively. For instance, during the beginning, he hears about the train robbery meanwhile the gang are starving and freezing in the mountains. More trouble was not what they needed but he did it anyway because he wanted to.

Shallow emotions - He acts like he cares about Arthur as a son but walked away when he was almost killed in Chapter 6 when he easily could have turned around and helped him. Also, for Arthur being by his side for 20 years, he said nothing and could not care less about Arthur being sick. He knows he is supposed to act like he cares about people so he puts on the act that he does. His relationship with Molly is shallow as well.

Irresponsibility - this one is obvious. He is constantly making decisions that are extremely dangerous and not good for the gang. By chapter 4, he should have more than enough money stowed away to start somewhere new. But instead, he decided to keep doing jobs that are negligent and also falling for obvious traps every time, dragging others with him even when they audibly did not want to.

Changes often - his image changes throughout the game, but also from stories in the game, Dutch used to be different. He used to be a shining example of an outlaw; a true Robin Hood. Was this a facade to draw people in? I think so. He was simply pretending to be a good person so that others would want to follow him, and once he had them under his control, it was on to bigger and better jobs. At the beginning of the game, he seemingly only cares about the gangs safety and sticking together. By the end of the game, its money.

Lack of empathy - Arthur was having extreme coughing fits in front of him. Almost everyone commented on his illness but Dutch. He never said anything, or showed any concern about his well being. It was on to the next thing and ignore it. He didn't care that John was about to be hung either. There are people he supposedly loves so much that he would risk everything for. He spends the entire game risking them for his own personal gain.

Lack of remorse, shame, or guilt - everything he does apparently has a purpose even though it seemingly goes wrong every time. The gang describes him as viciously killing an innocent woman during the ferry job. He has no shame, simply thought it needed to be done. He does not express any remorse or guilt for the things he's done, which are pretty terrible things.

Risky behavior - this one is self explanatory. Everything the man does is a gamble with life and death.

No concern for impact on others - if he wants to rob something extremely dangerous, he will do it and act as if you are betraying him if you do not want to. He is manipulative in this way and doesn't care if anyone gets hurt.

Dishonesty - He lies a lot, mostly about his concern and love for others.

In capacity for love - Leaving Arthur to die when they were being attacked by the army shows that he never loved Arthur. He had the money in his hand, he didn't care about anything else. He left his "son" to die there. Eagle Flies saved Arthur's life instead, who he had only known for a short amount of time.

Manipulative and deceitful - if you don't want to do exactly as he wants, then you have no faith and aren't loyal.

Oblivious to devastation - he doesn't really care about the devastation he's caused. He acts like he does but his actions show different. If he truly cared about the well being of the gang, he would've had a plan to leave during chapter 3 but he didn't. It was just more dangerous acts.

A lot of people will say that Dutch went crazy because everyone dies and leaves but what I really think made him go crazy is the feeling of losing control. He has a proper gang at the beginning, even after the ferry job. He knew they were loyal and had faith in him. He knew they would follow him no matter what he did. But as time went on and more people disagreed with him and he noticed that they thought differently of him, he started to get frustrated. More demanding, more aggressive. It went from "I have a plan. Just stick with me. We can do this." To "STAY WITH ME! KEEP FAITH! WHY DON'T YOU TRUST ME?!"

I also think the reason Hosea's death affected him so much is because Hosea was the person who had good ideas. Ones that actually worked. Hosea was a genuinely good person and it was easy to attach to him and pretend as if you were just like him. When Hosea died, he suddenly lost the best business partner he had. He acted as if he missed Hosea but he missed what Hosea offered. Hosea kept the whole gang together with his wisdom and ingenuity. When he passed away, suddenly the spotlight was entirely on him and people started seeing him for what he really was.

Simply put, Dutch was always "crazy" and has been using others to his own benefit his entire life. He never cared. All he cared about was money and having notoriety. He loved how his gang adored him. And when things started falling apart, he started showing who he really was.

As Rains Fall says, we only become more of who we really are.
