The meaning of the name Saint Denis

    Posted: 11 May 2021 03:28 AM PDT

Major spoilers for RDR2 ahead (pun intended). I was recently thinking about the place names of the RDR world, which lead me to wonder why the name Saint Denis was chosen. Obviously most of the in-game locations reflect real locations, e.g., New Austin is Texas, Ambarino is Colorado, etc. It's pretty obvious that Saint Denis is a stand in for New Orleans, but other than sounding vaguely French I hadn't thought where the name came from.

It turns out Saint Denis was a real person who lived in Paris in the 3rd century. He was famously decapitated for his faith during a time of great persecution. What makes him interesting - and why I think the name was chosen - is that a popular legend says that after his execution he picked up his head and walked for several miles while preaching repentance.

    SPOILERS

As you know, Saint Denis is where Arthur receives his terminal tuberculosis diagnosis. This initiates the final act of Arthur's story as he begins soul searching, questioning his life and ultimately rejecting the gang and choosing to do good with what time he has left.

So figuratively speaking, Arthur receives a death sentence and begins to preach repentance with his actions. I thought this was a really awesome detail and figured some of you would like to hear it!

I finished Red Dead Redemption 1 for the first time after playing the newer one, and this truly does feel like a perfect sequel, even though it was released much earlier. A remake with the newer engine would be perfect.
