My Thoughts on the Narrative Elements of RDR2

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 08:54 AM PST

I was really interested in RDR2's story and decided to share a few thoughts.

    MONEY CAN'T SAVE YOU

There are many opportunities towards the end of the game where you are prompted to accept or decline to earn money for doing good deeds (Braithwaite Jewellery, $ for rescuing the girl from the Murfree Broods). The whole game is spent on Arthur fighting to make money for his gang illegally. There is such an emphasis on making money to survive and live free.
However, Arthur ends up giving away all his possessions towards the end of the game and dies freer than the rest. This is juxtaposed to Dutch thinking that making more money will lead them to freedom.

    IMPORTANCE OF CLOTHING

It's traditionally been used as an exploratory device to reveal one's character through the clothes they wear. In Breaking Bad, for instance, Skylar wears blue clothing as she becomes the meth queen, then unsaturated, beige clothing as the business consumes her. Even in Westworld, *SPOILER\* William's descent into the MiB is foreshadowed by his transition from "white hat to black hat."

Arthur and Micah have always been opposites in many regards. Whereas Arthur sees himself as the antagonist (a true black hat characteristic) and always claims to be the bad guy, Micah sees his actions as justified (a white hat characteristic).

In the last mission, Arthur gives John his hat. This is a significant moment for the two. With the hat, he bestows John the transformation of a changed man. This whole game, Arthur is slowly transforming in death. In his redemption, he saves John, his family, and his future. It is only fitting that this transformed man passes down the symbol of his redemption to the man he saves.

Not all the characters were so lucky. In the epilogue, Micah is still seen donning his white hat and justifying his actions to John. However, Dutch has lost his hat entirely. He is no longer the Dutch we knew (if we could ever say we did). This is a new Dutch: that which no longer knows who or what he is. Whereas hats have always been a tangible way of representing how a character sees himself and the world, Dutch's transition from hat to hatless perfectly captures this transformation.

    SYMMETRICAL STORYTELLING

There are 2 distinct lines of symmetry in RDR's story, that is, two points in which the game begins to repeat itself. These 2 moments are the timing of Arthur's diagnosis and John's epilogue.

    ARTHUR'S DIAGNOSIS

Arthur's diagnosis is the inflection point in which he begins to change his ways (assuming you play an honourable Arthur), and the story starts to fold in on itself. To clarify with an obvious example, Arthur says that Rains Fall would've seemed weak and pathetic to him pre-diagnosis. This is because Arthur is becoming wise, contrary to his belief of being so back in chapter 1.

Arthur's actions also begin to bifurcate with the rest of the gang. His lack of aggressiveness causes him to kick Herr Straus out of the camp; his choice to save John and help Rains Fall makes him look like a traitor; his newfound commitment for redemption makes him 'insist' that Jack and Abigail leave, etc.

From an outside perspective, Arthur was becoming physically and mentally weak. This is why Rains Fall's character was introduced; he was introduced to show that wisdom should not be confused with weakness. What Arthur lost in vigour, he gained in wisdom. Those who sided with Dutch weren't wise in doing so, but weak enough to be gulled.

Here are some more points in which the game folds in on itself:

    - Arthur was the gang enforcer who collected money. He becomes the defender who gave his money and excommunicated Strauss.

    - Arthur went from killing Downes to saving his family from the terror he caused them.

    - The game begins with rescuing Arthur down a mountain surrounded by wolves. The game ends with Arthur escorting John up a mountain surrounded by Pinkertons.

    - The prologue and epilogue take place in the mountains with the destruction of Sadie's home by Micah, and the destruction of Micah's gang by John and Sadie.

    etc.

    JOHN'S EPILOGUE

The epilogue is meant to show Arthur's emphasis in RDR1 without ever outwardly showing him. It's a beautiful transition into the first game and adds so much to the story as a whole.

Arthur's final words to John and Abigail was him trying to amend his own mistakes as well.

In his final conversation with Abigail, he says how John loved her so much despite not always showing it. In his final conversation to John, it was about how he has to become a better man because he has a family.

Being a family man was something Arthur always wanted but could never hold on to. By giving John and Abigail the life they deserve by sacrificing his own, he vicariously lives the life he always wanted to by actively being the symbol of redemption in the RDR story.

Arthur's final act of self-sacrifice was the redemptive act needed to absolve himself of the mistakes he made.

There is so much more to discuss, but I'll cut it here.
