Posted: 25 Feb 2020 08:13 AM PST So my first playthrough of chapter 2, I realized how the plot felt like the average Rockstar game. Specifically with the main protagonist being visited/blackmailed by a government agent to do their bidding (like ULP in GTA IV and Steve Haines in GTA V), the main protagonist having a love interest (that serves as a mission giver) that he has to win back (like Michael in GTA V), having heists that will gain the player money, having a rival gang that is conveyed as the main problem to the protagonists that will need to be fought, having some ultra rich business mogul going after the protagonists (Devin Weston and Cornwall), having a mission where the player just gets drunk as hell, and having multiple missions where you just murder half a town (Blessed are the Meek? for example). However, this is how Chapter 2 is genius, they setup the average Rockstar plot elements and make it so that the transition from GTA V's campaign to RDR2 easier. But Chapter 3 knocks down most of these similarities, instead of the protagonist following the word of the government agent, he chooses to stick with his gang, instead of following his love interest, he sticks to the gang. Instead of GTA V's limitless and non-consequential slaughter of entire cities of NPCs in missions/free roam, there are consequences to those actions. The main antagonist gang is switched out for a different gang. Sean's sudden death is supposed to serve as a wakeup call to the player that this isn't GTA V anymore, that it's not going to be a success story with Arthur getting back his love interest, making a ton of cash and then happily retiring. Dutch almost symbolizes the common GTA solution to the protagonist's problems: Get Money, Kill A Ton of People, Escape without a trace. But the game continually reminds the player that there are consequences to their actions, and take a more realistic approach to this solution. [link] [comments] | ||
