It hits me even harder the second time. Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:12 PM PDT I decided to have a second quarantine run of this game, I just finished the main story and all I can say is this game has to be the greatest video game story of all time. No other game has made me feel this way for a character and got me so connected to the world that it's built. When Arthur says goodbye to Jack and Tilly it's pretty bittersweet, but when he says goodbye to Abigail and Sadie and That's The Way It Is starts slowly fading in it just totally hit me. Riding back into camp and confronting Dutch and Micah all alone with the sudden return of John is incredible. Even the little details like Javier still refusing to point his gun at John and Arthur during the standoff. The ride up to the mountain is absolutely heartbreaking, knowing that this is the last ride with your horse and what's to come in the next few scenes. I held onto that last ride as much as possible, and it's such a gut punch when Arthur stops to say goodbye and thank you to the dying horse that you've made a connection with for the entirety of the game and who's been by your side in all your endeavours, totally personal to the player. Anyone with a pet will know just how unique and loving the bonds between humans and animals are, and you can really feel that with Arthur and his horse. The scene between John and Arthur is amazing as well. Arthur just telling John to go and be with his family, doing his best to ensure that John makes it and trying to make sure that his one final good deed pays off. The moment where John says "you're my brother" is beautiful. It's his way of telling Arthur that despite all the disagreements and bad blood between them in the past, they've stuck by each other and he appreciates what Arthur's done for him. Beating up Micah is so satisfying. There's really not much more to be said than that. It also goes to show just how weak Micah is that he can't even win a fight with a man on the verge of dying from Tuberculosis. When Arthur finally talks sense into Dutch you can see in his eyes all the regret for what he's done so far, and a slight glisten of tears as he watches his son that he's raised die in front of him, totally speechless. Micah isn't even able to finish Arthur off because he knows, in the end, that Arthur has won. Arthur finally awakened Dutch to Micah's lies, and has achieved satisfaction with his life knowing that he helped his friend and brother escape to a better life. As Micah and Dutch leave you can see a little hint of a smile in Arthur's face, if only for a second, as he clambers higher up the ridge to watch his final sunrise, knowing that he has died a good man. I'm pretty tired so this probably wasn't very well written and I probably come off as one of those awful "we are gamers" Facebook memes but this game is honestly just such an experience, and one that could only be told through a game. The depth, creativity and character development that Rockstar put into this game is absolutely astounding. It's safe to say that very few pieces of media and art make me feel as much emotion as this game has. What a masterpiece. [link] [comments] | ||
