All common questions about the game should be directed here. This includes both single-player and online questions. When asking a question, it is often beneficial to share which mode you are referring to in order to get an accurate response. Also consider sharing any relevant information that may help someone answer your question.

All story spoilers must be displayed with the proper format:

    >!RDR is a great game!<

If you're not sure if you should use a spoiler tag or not, err on the side of caution and use one. Also, it's a nice gesture to visibly indicate the general nature of your spoiler before the tag, so people know what you're spoiling.

    I'm Left Speechless [Spoiler]

    Posted: 01 May 2020 12:02 AM PDT

I had a truly striking realization recently, after finishing Chapter 6 of my second playthrough with High Honor.

As Arthur lay dying and Dutch has his foot on Arthur's shooting hand, Arthur tells him "I gave you everything I had. I did". As Micah shouts for Dutch to run, Dutch, for the first time I've ever seen, is speechless. He stammers and steps back off of Arthur, looking at him in disbelief. At that moment, I think Dutch realized just what he'd done. The look he gives Arthur is a mix of pain and confusion, almost like he can't understand how his best friend, brother, and son is taking his last breaths under his boot. Then he looks to Micah not with hate, but with disgust. At that point he sees that he LET Micah manipulate him. He let himself get carried away in his greed, both for money and freedom. He let Arthur kill himself trying to help John. He was left reeling after Hosea's death, and Micah was conveniently there to affirm his every action. He found a way to justify every course of action he took, from leaving John to die (TWICE), leaving Abigail to the same fate, and (I think most tragically) leading some of the last remaining members of the Wapiti Lakota to their deaths for nothing. All of this falls on Dutch like a hammer, his plans and witty replies drowned out by his son's ragged final breaths. So he leaves.

I believe this moment was what really drove Dutch to the state we see him in RDR1, as well as the epilogue. Watching Arthur die beaten, abandoned, and almost entirely without peace or closure broke him. That's why he can't speak to or look at John in the epilogue, and hates him so much in RDR1. John is a perfect portrait of all of Dutch's worst failures. He sees everything he's done wrong in John's eyes. Heidi McCourt, Jenny, Mac, Davey, Sean, Kieran, Hosea, Lenny, Molly, Susan, Eagle Flies and his Warriors, Arthur, Micah, Bill, Javier, and even John himself. Dutch perpetuated every death or violent act that ever happened around him, all in the name of his "Savage Utopia". And by the time John finds him in RDR1, he has absolutely nothing left to live for.

He's lost and insane, but just can't stop. Its in his nature to scheme and plan, to try to find some way to achieve some oft pointless and random goal, no matter the cost. Dutch realizes over time that Arthur and John didn't change, they saw through him. He didn't change either, he just let the mask fall fully off. And he understands that revenge and redemption are in John's nature, and that he can't expect him to fight it either. So he lassos a final shred of control from life and kills himself, ending his life with one of the most unnatural acts imaginable (from an animal perspective, I'm not commentating on suicide).

Dutch knew for 12 years what he was, and never did come to terms with it. And it all started with the first time someone left him speechless.

UPDATE: Well, holy shit. My very first ever post on Reddit and we're nearing 6k likes. And REWARDS??? What a bunch of good boah's, giving me a bit of that Braithwaite treasure. Thank you all so much for the love, criticism, and discussion. YOU ALL ARE MY BROTHER (and sister too).

Just realized at the beginning of the game, Lenny said to Micah, "When you fall, there'll be a party." And there was.

    Charles fucking Smith

    Posted: 01 May 2020 08:50 AM PDT

Everytime i pick up this game i cant help but curse rockstar for not letting charles be even more of a prominent character, hes the most honorable and levelheaded person in the game. Hes a beast in combat and a better man than anyone else in the game, high honor arthur included. The voice acting for him was top notch. His story and where he places his loyalties just make me respect the fuck out of him and count myself honored to have a homie like him in the gang.

So yeah just kind of a Charles Smith appreciation post. Fuck Micah

So after a year and a half, and basically having to do the Gold Rush trophy twice, I FINALLY achieved platinum in RDR2...

    Amen. Hallelujah. Arthur bless.

TL:DR - BACK UP YOUR SAVE FILES. I REPEAT, BACK UP YOUR F****** SAVE FILES, or else you'll end up like me, having 68 out of 70 gold medals completed for the Gold Rush trophy, only to lose everything because of a spontaneous PS4 factory reset. And by everything, I mean the entirety of my 536+ hour save file that wasn't backed up.

Needless to say, this experience was an ordeal... https://www.reddit.com/user/westernwitcher/comments/gbria3/do_you_want_to_hear_the_gutwrenching_story_of_a/
