I’m taking a machinist class. One project was making a keychain tag and could put whatever design that we wanted on the tag. I just had to draw it out and program the CNC. This is what I did.

This game is incredible... and infinitely better than GTA V

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 07:05 AM PDT

Yeah yeah I know I'm extremely late to the party and this is very old news to most of you. But still feel I should make this point as I played these games directly after each other so I can compare them very well.

I gamed fanatically until about 2008, after which I didn't have much time anymore and got interested in other stuff. However recently due to a health condition I've had lots of time on my hands to start gaming again. I wanted to play all the classics of the last 10 years so figured I'd start with GTA V and then play RDR2.

I've put 100+ hours in GTA V (single player), achieved 100% completion and most achievements. I'm not gonna lie, I absolutely loved it. The missions are great, the dialogue is very clever and funny and the open world is amazing. To have this kind of open world already in 2013, released on PS3 and X360 is one of the greatest accomplishments I've seen in gaming.

Still, I felt like there was much to be improved. I loved exploring the open world, but only because of the aesthetics; and after a while that becomes boring. It just felt pointless to me. You drive around, find some cool hidden spot or building, get excited with your discovery, only to be disappointed straight away after finding out there is just nothing to do with your discovery. No rewards, no collectibles, nothing. I ended up just driving back 'home' with a rather empty feeling.

The game completely misses a real incentive to explore. Same with the side missions, the street races and the parachuting and all that. Why would I do it? No rewards, no incentive, nothing. Same with random activities like holding up stores or blowing up a money transport van. Why would I do it? To earn $5000, having to evade 3 stars, while you can earn hundreds of thousands or even millions with completing a few missions? I just didn't see the point. Or with character development. Why would I want to improve strength, shooting etc if I'm never challenged up to the point I WANT to improve my character? Same with weapons and cars, why would I want to earn money, to buy new cars and weapons, while you can easily finish the game with a standard machine gun and basic car? Again, it completely lacked incentive.

It annoyed me because San Andreas is such an amazing open world that you could have developed an all-time great game if you'd developed a well-working incentive system. Ideally, for an open world game you want to be pushed to explore the open world, to develop your character, earn money and rewards, which then help you during your missions. GTA 5 completely failed at that.

Then I started playing RDR2, expecting the same irritations. I'm now 35% in and boy, was I wrong. RDR2 fixes exactly those issues and does it in such an amazing way. Everywhere you go, every deserted little shack, you can find collectibles. Every time you explore something, you're actually happy that you did and you feel satisfied with your discovery. Every little reward and collective you get, has some use to it. I was amazed when I found out that the dinosaur bone I collected actually gave me a reward, which I could use for a trinket that gave me some perk. And, more importantly, I find dinosaur bones myself, without some YouTube guide. This is just two weeks after I had to grind endlessly with YouTube on my phone in my hand to find those annoying Spaceship parts and letter scraps in GTA 5, that you would never be able to find without a guide, and give you exactly zero reward.

Also, every trip you take you run into some animal and if they are 3 stars you just have to go for that perfect pelt. It just never becomes dull or boring. Even then, if that becomes boring, there's so many challenges you want to beat, further incentivising you to explore, giving you a reward, etc. In GTA 5 I just had to come up with challenges by myself, like holding out with 5 star wanted level or beating my top speed in a vehicle. Also, you actually WANT to develop your character since you're starting out with so little health, stamina and dead eye. I think you get my point by now.

This game is absolutely amazing. I put like 40 hours in, am on 35% and still only halfway chapter 2. I really don't want to play missions because they're bringing me closer to the point where this is over. Also, if Rockstar adds all these fixes to GTA 6 then I absolutely can't wait for that as well!
